Checklist For Pipe Wrenches

Checklist For Pipe Wrenches

Water Pump Pliers
  • The water pump pliers are the classic pipe wrench. You can adjust these pliers in four to six steps, depending on the manufacturer and model. With water pump pliers you can grip and turn pipes and fittings with a diameter of about 1.5 to 2 inches (about 50 mm).
  • Water pump pliers were originally designed for screwing glands onto car water pumps. This is where the name of these pliers comes from. Most water pump pliers have a length of about 25 cm.
Corner Pipe Wrenches
  • Corner pipe pliers are heavy-duty pliers that come in different sizes. The jaws of these pliers are S-shaped in design and are usually at an angle of about 45° to the handles.
  • Typical sizes for the pipe wrenches, also known as Swedish corner pliers or Swedish pliers for short, are lengths of 215 mm and 280 mm. Large specimens have a length of up to 900 mm.
  • Depending on the size, you can use these pliers to screw pipes and sockets with a diameter of 1 to 4 inches (about 100 mm). The jaws of the Swedish pliers are self-clamping. Once applied, you can use these pliers with one hand.
One-Handed Pliers
  • A one-handed pliers is a special pipe wrench. Unlike the Swedish pliers, they have only one lever. These pliers are especially suitable for large-sized pipes and fittings.
  • They can be used as a substitute for a large wrench. One-handed pliers usually have a length of 75 to 90 cm and weigh about 3 to 4 kg.
Fitting Pliers
  • Fitting pliers are also a special type of pipe wrench. Due to their flat and smooth jaws, they do not scratch the delicate surfaces of faucets.
  • Depending on the manufacturer, they can be equipped with so-called protective jaws, which additionally protect surfaces from damage.
Material
  • High quality pipe wrenches are made of chrome vanadium steel, abbreviated CV. This type of steel is very tough and resistant. Because of the high chromium content, CV steels do not rust. Forged pipe wrenches are particularly robust and durable, but also expensive.
